Happy birthday to us! Celebrating 2 years of the Charlton House websites

By David Snelling

I set up Charlton House Wealth Management as a specialist advice firm for internationally mobile individuals in 2019.

However, it wasn’t until the following year that we launched our websites and brand.

You’ll note that I’ve used the plural there. This is down to our unique status of having registered offices and being authorised to provide financial advice in two different financial jurisdictions. We decided from outset that each should be served by a different website. So we have a dedicated UK site, and a separate site in Hong Kong – although the content of both covers many of the same topics and concerns.

With that in mind, read about why a website is so integral to any business, and some of the key factors we’ve taken into consideration while developing both our sites and our brand.

A good website is integral to any business

The website is the shop window for any business.

For one thing, like an actual high street shop window, it gives you a clear and immediate idea of what we do and is the first port of call for many of you coming across Charlton House for the first time.

The importance of this was accentuated when you consider that, for 18 months after our site launched, the Covid pandemic meant most of us spent lengthy spells in lockdown and both face-to-face meetings and international travel were impossible.

The key aims of our websites

While we were developing our brand and websites, we had some key aims in mind, driving our thoughts. These included:

  • Both sites should be easily accessible and simple to navigate
  • The content should be interesting and informative
  • Having visited once, we want people to check back regularly
  • All the content and information should be up to date and topical for the audience.

We also wanted to ensure that the design was clean and straightforward, matching our brand identity.

Looking at the sites now, two years down the line, I’d like to think you can agree that we’ve ticked those four boxes.

The content is all-important

We want the sites to be trusted sources of information and resources to help you with your financial planning and, hopefully, increase your understanding of how to manage your money.

As well as the articles that you read in our monthly newsletters, which are all published on the website, there are extensive archives of articles and other useful content.

You’ll find content covering four key aspects related to planning your financial future:

  • Investment planning
  • Estate planning
  • Retirement planning
  • Tax planning

As well as that you can also read, and download, detailed guides covering some of the key issues relating to financial advice for UK expats and those based in the UK.

There are also a series of videos that provide a high-level overview of property tax and issues involved with moving from Hong Kong to the UK. You’ll see that they’re split into bite-size chunks, making them easier for you to digest – a handy alternative to long articles and guides.

Finally, based on the premise that “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, there’s some lifestyle content, so you can read articles about real ale, private members clubs in the UK, and our recommendations for books and films set in both Hong Kong and the UK.

Data suggests that both sites are attracting attention and being used:

  • Between them, they have had over 20,000 visitors
  • The most-popular article has been read more than 7,000 times
  • The guides have been downloaded 175 times.

We’re regularly reviewing the sites and the content provided for you.

Your feedback is invaluable so if you have any comments about what’s there or if there’s anything in particular you’d like to see, then please let us know.
